Trademarks, patents, copyright and designs

Introduction

Protecting the brands, inventions, creative works and product designs a business depends on, in the Kingdom and abroad.

Each form of intellectual property protects something different and follows its own rules. Trademarks protect brands and can be renewed indefinitely; patents protect inventions for a limited term; copyright protects creative works and software; industrial designs protect the look of a product. All are administered in the Kingdom by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property.

The legal framework is changing. The new Copyright Law, in force since 12 August 2026, adds rules on AI development, software licences, online platforms and works created by employees, and the Kingdom's membership of the Madrid Protocol lets one application extend trademark protection to many countries.

As a licensed IP agent, AZ&P advises on what can be protected and how, files and prosecutes applications before the authority, and coordinates protection in the other markets where the client trades.
